SEATTLE -- The Seattle Mariners salvaged the third game of a pretty big September series against fellow wild-card contender Houston on Sunday. That series was nothing compared to the enormity of the three games that could make or break Seattle over the next three days. The Mariners (79-70) come off their Sunday win over Houston with a huge series against a Toronto team that lost Sunday and now holds a two-game lead over Seattle in the American League wild-card standings. The approach the Mariners are taking into this series with all-or-nothing consequences is to treat it like the rest.Anyone can beat anyone, catcher Mike Zunino said after Sundays 7-3 win over the Astros. To put added pressure on ourselves is out of our style. Thats not something we need to do.Center fielder Leonys Martin said the Mariners arent getting too wrapped up in the standings. Were in a situation now where weve got to win every game, no matter who were playing, Martin said. We just need to keep fighting and never give up, like weve been doing.Seattle will send right-hander Taijuan Walker to the mound for Mondays opener, and its hard to know what to expect whenever the 24-year-old former top prospect is on the mound. Walker struggled with inconsistency and a foot injury to the point that he was demoted to Triple-A in August, and he endured one of the worst starts of his career in a 10-3 loss to the Angels on Sept. 3. But hes bounced back to put together two solid outings, including a complete-game shutout his last time out.The Mariners credit Walkers latest turnaround -- albeit for only two starts -- to a dramatic change in his delivery. Its worked out so far, as the new delivery has produced good results.Pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr. told MLB.com recently that Walkers willingness to adapt was a big part of his improvement. At the tail end of the season for a team that is possibly in a playoff run, to go out and kind of create a new delivery is not easy to do, Stottlemyre said.Toronto is hoping starter Marco Estrada (8-9, 3.78 ERA) can change the teams fortunes after losing the final two games of the Angels series over the weekend. The Blue Jays managed to score just one run in those two losses, causing them to fall a game behind Baltimore in the wild-card standings.Sundays loss left manager John Gibbons to tell reporters: Sometimes you run into a road block and you struggle. The Blue Jays hope to navigate the obstacle and keep moving forward this week -- and on into their final three series against the Yankees, Orioles and Red Sox.Were right there, shortstop Troy Tulowitzki told MLB.com on Sunday. Last year, two years, three years ago, I had no idea what the future had in store for me and Im very fortunate that David and the Brewers organization looked at me with hope and believe in me and believe in my talent set.Carter tied for the National League lead in home runs with 41 in 2016, his one season with the Brewers after signing for $2.5 million. He is eligible for arbitration, and the Brewers have until 10 days to attempt to trade the 29-year-old slugger.A trade is a distinct possibility, general manager David Stearns said.Thames, 30, had a .348 average over the past three seasons for the NC Dinos in the Korean Baseball Organization, winning MVP honors in 2015 after becoming the first KBO player to hit 40 homers and steal 40 bases in a season. He again hit 40 home runs and had 118 RBIs in 2016.Eric brings to the organization a left-handed power bat that is a good fit for our lineup, Stearns said in a statement. His ability to play first base along with both corner outfield positions adds versatility to the roster. Eric has been extremely impressive over his last three seasons in Korea, and we look forward to his return to the Major Leagues in 2017.Thames previously played with the Toronto Blue Jays SAN ANTONIO -- Spurs coach Gregg Popovich spoke Friday about his frustration with Tuesdays election of Donald Trump as the 45th president of the United States.Im still sick to my stomach, and not basically because the Republicans won or anything, but the disgusting tenor, tone and all the comments that have been xenophobic, homophobic, racist, misogynistic, he said before the Spurs home game against the Detroit Pistons. And I live in that country where half the people ignored all that to elect someone. Thats the scariest part of [the] whole thing to me.Its got nothing to do with the environment, Obamacare and all the other stuff. We live in a country that ignored all those values that we would hold our kids accountable for.Popovich spoke with reporters for nearly six minutes about the election. He said he understands why some, including political leaders, are calling for Americans to support the president-elect. But Popovich said Trumps words cannot be simply overlooked and forgotten.Everybody wants him to be successful. Its our country; we dont want it to go down the drain, Popovich said. Any reasonable person would come to that conclusion, but it does not take away the fact that he used that fear-mongering and all the comments from day one. The race-baiting with trying to make Barack Obama, our first black president, illegitimate. It leaves me to wonder where Ive been living and with whom Im living.Popovich also expressed empathy for minority groups that might be adversely affected by Trumps remarks during his campaign. What gets lost in the process are African-Americans, Hispanics, women and the gay population, not to mention the eighth-grade developmental stage exhibited by him when he made fun of the handicapped person, he said. I mean, come on. Thats what an eighth-grade bully does, and he was elected president of the United States. We would have scolded our kids. We would have had discussions and talked until we were blue in the face trying to get them to understand these things. And he is in charge of our country. Thats disgusting.Popovich emphasized that his problem with Trump isnt merely a matter of political affiliation.Values to me are more important than anybodys skill in business or anything else because it tells who we are, how we want to live and what kind of people we are, he said. Thats why I have great respect for people like Lindsey Graham, John McCain, John Kasich, who I disagree with on a lot of political things. But they had enough fiber and respect for humanity and tolerance for all groups to say what they said about [Trump].When a reporter interrupted to start a new line of questioning, Popovich cut him off.Im not done, he said. One could go on and on. We didnt make this stuff up. Hes angry at the media because they reported what he said and how he acted. Its ironic to me. It just makes no sense. So thats my real fear.?And thats what gives me so much pause and makes me feel so badly, that the country is willing to be that intolerant and not understand the empathy thats necessary to understand other groups situations.Im a rich, white guy. And Im sick to my stomach thinking about it. I couldnt imagine being a Muslim right now or a woman or an African-American, a Hispanic, a handicapped person, and how disenfranchised they might feel. And for anyone in those groups that voted for him, its just beyond my comprehension how they ignored all that.As his remarks ended, Popovich said he was concerned that the U.S. is on the same path as the Roman Empire. My final conclusion is, my big fear is, we are Rome, he said.Popovich is just one of many coaches and athletes who have shared their opinions on the election following Trumps victory Tuesday. As anti-Trump protests spread nationwide after the election, Clippers coach Doc Rivers said Wednesday night that there was nothing wrong with people protesting Trumps election victory but that they should be open to giving him the opportunity to prove himself. The election didnt go the way I wanted it to go, Rivers said. I personally know Donald Trump. Ive golfed with him, and I know him. I dont think theres anyone who runs for president that wants to do bad. I really dont. So, you know, he won. My take on it: Lets give him a chance and see what he can do. Thats the only way anyway now. So, lets go with that.Pistons?coach Stan Van Gundy said he noticed his players were uncharacteristically quiet because they were thinking about the election, and Van Gundy told the Detroit Free Press that Trump was openly and brazenly racist and misogynistic.I have problems with thinking that this is where we are as a country. Its tough on [the team], he said. What we have done to minorities ... in this election is despicable. Im having a hard time dealing with it.The Associated Press contributed to this report. (STATS) -- North Dakota States FCS dynasty wasnt halted Friday night because of a fluke play, an officials mistake or anything that could have people questioning the outcome. No, the top-seeded Bison wont be adding to their record streak of five consecutive FCS national championships because fourth-seeded James Madison simply was the better team in its 27-17 victory in the national semifinals before 18,282 at the Fargo dome. The Dukes (13-1) basically had to win the game twice. The CAA Football champion built a 17-0 lead in the first half and gave it all away, then overcame North Dakota States momentum in the second half to win going away at the Bisons usually invincible home field. In ending NDSUs 22-game playoff win streak, James Madison advanced to the national championship game Jan. 7 in Frisco, Texas against the winner of Saturdays semifinal between Youngstown State (11-3) and No. 2 seed Eastern Washington (12-1).James Madison captured the 2004 FCS title -- 31-21 over Montana -- in its only other appearance in the final.I came in and Ive got a bunch of kids that bought in to what we were teaching and believed in the culture we were trying to create, and Ive got a great coaching staff, James Madison first-year coach Mike Houston said. Its play as hard as you can every snap, doing things right, its really a special bunch in there. I could not be more proud of the effort.NDSU (12-2) hadnt lost in the playoffs since a 38-31 overtime defeat at Eastern Washington in the 2010 quarterfinals, and it was 83-6 since the beginning of the 2011 national championship season. Yet, while the Dukes win was an upset, it wasnt a shocker. They havent lost to an FCS opponent, are on an 11-game winning streak and have outscored three opponents in the playoffs 147-46.Junior quarterback Bryan Schor threw for 242 yards and a touchdown to three different receivers. One went to 5-foot-11, 220-pound senior Khalid Abdullah, who looked like an NFL running back while gashing the formidable Bison defense with speed and elusive cuts for 180 yards on 23 carries.Defensively, linebackers Dimitri Holloway and Gage Steele were all over the field with 16 and 11 tackles, respectively. North Dakota State managed only 132 rushing yards -- 117 below what had been its season average.I thought we did a great job running the football up front, Houston saaid.dddddddddddd Khalid and our offensive line kind of got us going, we got some field position, we were able to control the ball and really keep North Dakota States offense off the field. And our defense played lights out tonight. What a performance.James Madison took the lead for good 20-17 on Tyler Grays career-long 45-yard field goal with 11:46 to play, and Schor extended it on their next possession by connecting with wide receiver John Miller for a 25-yard touchdown.Grays go-ahead kick nearly didnt happen. Bison defensive lineman Brad Ambrosius jumped offside when Schor was trying a pooch punt on 4th-and-19 at the Bison 33. The penalty moved the ball to the 28, and the Dukes let Gray try the field goal even though he had never kicked one longer than 33 yards. We came in, we knew it was going to be loud, we knew it was going to be a lot of adversity. But we expected to come in here and win, said Abdullah, whose 231 all-purpose yards were a career high.Good football player, NDSU coach Chris Klieman said of Abdullah. We missed some (tackles). When James Madison took a 17-0 lead in the first half, it handed North Dakota State the largest deficit of its FCS playoff history -- all this decade. The Dukes had touchdown drives of 87 and 72 yards, with Schor sandwiching touchdown passes to tight end Jonathan Kloosterman (14 yards) and Abdullah (10) around a 24-yard field goal by Gray. But it was the second straight week that North Dakota State erased a double-digit deficit, as it scored the final 36 points of a 36-10 win over South Dakota State in the quarterfinals last Saturday.NDSU got a much-needed touchdown just before the game reached halftime. Fullback Chase Morlock capped an 11-play drive with a 3-yard run which pulled the Bison within 17-7 with 1:36 left. They got the ball to start the second half and Cam Pedersen ended the possession with a 45-yard field goal. King Frazier later rushed for a 16-yard touchdown on their second possession, tying the game 17-17.But the fourth quarter -- and the game -- belonged to James Madison.North Dakota States first win of its first FCS championship season in 2011 was against the Dukes. Ironically, the winning streak ended against the same program.(2011-12) and the Seattle Mariners (2012), hitting .250 in 181 games with 21 home runs and 82 RBIs before signing to play in Korea in December 2013. His journey thus far is inspiring. You always respect and admire someone who has gone through a journey like this and ended up in a place like this and a day like this. You also respect and understand that someone like him is going to feel like he has more to do, and that his journey is not finished. That sets him up to have success here, and Im excited he has chosen this as the place to continue his journey. His deal also includes a provision that prevents the Brewers from offering him salary arbitration and allows him to become a free agent at the conclusion of his contract, the source said. Thames currently has one year-plus of MLB service time and will be short of the six-year free agency threshold at the end of his deal with the Brewers.
